I am a DPhil student in the Department of Plant Sciences, University of Oxford working on a joint project supervised by Professor Phil Poole, Professor George Ratcliffe and Dr Nick Kruger. My project aims to understand the metabolic cross-talk between nitrogen-fixing bacteria and its host plant that is required for a successful symbiosis. I am using a systems biology based approach termed as “metabolic flux analysis” to measure the intracellular fluxes that are supported by the bacterial and plant cell metabolic networks in the symbiosis. The flux maps will provide an understanding of true metabolic phenotype of the symbionts involved during nitrogen fixation.
